William Ruto's Early Life

William Ruto was born on December 21, 1966, in Rift Valley province, Sambut village, Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County, to Daniel Cheruiyot (father) and Sarah Cheruiyot (mother). Ruto grew up in a rural area, herding and attending local schools. His family had nothing to meet their daily needs, forcing him to sell chickens and groundnuts along the Nakuru-Eldoret road, helping his parents meet their daily needs.

Moi nominated him as treasurer of the YK '92 campaign group lobbying for the re-election of the late President Moi. After President Moi burned YK'92, he attempted to branch for various positions in KANU but failed.

Kenya held a constitutional referendum. In 2005, though opposed, he solidified his voter base in the Rift Valley Province by joining KANU. After the 2007 election, Kibaki was declared the winner by the Kenya Election Commission. However, Kibaki was quickly sworn in as the President of Kenya. Ruto was a crucial figure in the negotiations that led to the formation of a power-sharing government between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga after the 2007–2008 Kenyan Crisis. He significantly influenced Kenya's response to the 2009 Westgate shopping mall attack. From 2008 to March 4, 2013, Ruto was appointed as the Minister for Agriculture and became Eldoret North's member of parliament.
