The Founders of Muthokinju Paints.

//

Despite its popularity, Muthokinju started from humble beginnings as small hardware in Kenyatta Market in Ngumo Estate, Nairobi. Its growth was slow and steady.

The face of the business

Muthokinju Paints originated MUTHOKINJU is derived from the founders' names MUTHO (Muthoni), KI (Kimani), and NJU (Njuguna). Currently, 14 branches are running across the country and have over 150 employees. They aim at supplying and delivering on time, efficiently, and effectively accomplish the service delivery. Susan and Barnabas have run the business for over 26 years facing and overcoming business challenges. Muthoni's experience running the Mama Safi restaurant at Kenyatta Market motivated them all along.

Although she had experience in the restaurant, they were discouraged by the perishable food and waste of the remaining food resulting in losses. They both preferred a hardware store. Today Muthokinju has become a known brand ambassador for paints, adhesives, cement, decorating sundries, building steel, and roofing sheets.

The Business Inheritor

Benjamin, their son, learned the business basics at 9. He turned out to be the best pick of his parents after years of working. Today Benjamin is the Managing Director, and his wife Sarafina Njatha serves as the Operations Director. He describes lessons from his parents, "I think if there's one big lesson I've learned from my parents, it’s humility. Because they're always humble and still working up to date, they help us in different roles."

About four years ago, Benjamin, the new Managing Director, described it hadn't been an easy task. He had high goals for business expansion. He recalls it as the "best mistake." A business plan was the best instrument for a business to grow at a perfect pace. However, he was forced to slow down and develop a business plan. Due to the efficient business plan, the company enjoys enormous profits and great publicity.

The Benefits of the Pandemic to the Company

In 2020, the COVID-19 Pandemic forced people to spend more time on their homesteads due to the lockdown. Many began noticing their homes and the changes needed. Even though this pandemic lockdown had adverse effects on many businesses, it wasn't for Muthokinju. They describe the Pandemic as a silver lining to their business.

Benjamin's observations were, "It's interesting that people started decorating their homes more during these COVID times due to working from home. They want to upgrade their spaces. It brought about an increase in paint and cement." During those hard times Pandemic, the business remained constant even after limited movement in and out of Nairobi, and the company deployed trucks, making deliveries easier.

Future Plans, Growth, and Innovation

The company headquarters is located in Imara Daima. Over the last ten years. However, the company has capitalized on innovation and ways to expand and grow the business. The Manager Director easily monitors business operations from all the branches while in the central unit since the company has computerized and connected its store branches to the main component.

The company has been established as a building material supplier for regions and Africa. However, the company plans to go into e-commerce. Benjamin explains that the automation of the business hasn’t gone unnoticed, "Different partners have given us a lot of accolades because of using technology to optimize our business." Their decorative range comprises products suitable for all residential houses, offices, factories, and public buildings for decoration and protection.
